Southeastern Mexico — The Maya Train project is preparing to launch a new gastronomic tourism experience designed to integrate regional cuisine, cultural sites, and scenic routes across southeastern Mexico.
Óscar David Lozano Águila, head of the Maya Train, announced that the “gastronomic train” will offer packages focused on food, culture, and nature, aiming to attract both domestic and international visitors. The project was developed with support from the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) and hotel associations in Yucatán, Cancún, and the Riviera Maya, along with 42 tourism providers who participated in pilot tours.
Five New Routes
The experience will feature five round-trip routes, all starting and ending at the same point for convenience:
- Cancún – Tulum – Cancún
- Cancún – Chichén Itzá – Cancún
- Mérida – Valladolid – Mérida
- Mérida – San Francisco de Campeche – Mérida
- Mérida – Edzná – Mérida
The Experience
Lozano Águila explained that journeys will begin with a brunch served onboard the train, allowing passengers to sample regional dishes as they travel. The tours will include visits to archaeological sites and cultural destinations, concluding with a five-course dinner prepared by certified chefs.
Highlights will include tours of the Magic Town of Valladolid, archaeological zones, and the heritage city of San Francisco de Campeche.
Local Chefs and Expansion Plans
All meals will be prepared by local chefs and restaurateurs from Quintana Roo, Yucatán, and Campeche, strengthening regional culinary identity and involving the gastronomic sector in the tourism product. Lozano Águila added that authorities plan to expand this model to other states like Chiapas to further diversify tourism offerings in southeastern Mexico.
