Tulum, Quintana Roo — The driver of a Maya Train bus fled the scene after causing a traffic accident on Federal Highway 307 near the southern entrance to Tulum on Saturday morning. The collision involved a BMW X6 and raised concerns about the training and oversight of operators for the federally funded transportation project.

Details of the Collision

The bus, bearing license plate 11-02-01-0 and registration number 61-HC-4G, was en route to the community of Muyil when it struck the BMW, which had Morelos license plates (PZP-360-D). Witnesses reported that the impact was initially at risk of being head-on but ultimately occurred on the left side of the private vehicle, preventing more severe consequences for its occupants.

According to bystanders, the bus driver may have lost control after falling asleep or attempting to avoid an obstacle. Following the crash, the operator abandoned the vehicle and has not yet been located.

Authorities Respond

National Guard officers arrived at the scene to conduct necessary procedures, as the stretch of road where the accident occurred falls under federal jurisdiction. The securing and removal of the vehicles caused temporary traffic disruptions.

No serious injuries were reported, but the incident has sparked scrutiny over the hiring, training, and supervision protocols for Maya Train operators. The project, a flagship initiative of the federal government, has faced previous criticism regarding safety and operational standards.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to locate the missing driver.
