Maya Ka’an Tourism Destination Strengthened Through New Strategies and Partnerships

Tourism officials meeting at the Maya Ka'an destination management session in Felipe Carrillo Puerto

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — Tourism officials have agreed to integrate Mexico’s National Tourism Promotion Fund (FONATUR) into the Maya Ka’an destination management organization to develop sustainable tourism projects across the region.

The decision came during the first regular 2026 session of the Maya Ka’an management organization, held at the municipal council chambers with most members present.

Municipal Tourism Director Zendy Euan Chan welcomed participants to the session, noting that actions taken during 2025 had produced fruitful results. She emphasized the need to follow up on specific issues to maintain the momentum they had established.

During the session, officials also agreed to establish working groups focused on projects presented by FONATUR, concentrating on community tourism as a strategic activity for the country.

The management organization further agreed to consider incorporating the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve into the rural community area for certification under the Community Tourism Distinction (DTC) program.

Officials announced that cooperative businesses along the Caste War Route will be integrated into the European market and strengthened through cooperation agreements with the European Union. This joint initiative by the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat aims to ensure Maya Ka’an community tourism meets sustainability standards while connecting culture, history, and natural heritage protection.

The session was led by Municipal Tourism Director Zendy Euan Chan, representing Mayor Mary Hernández, and Andrés Gerardo Aguilar Becerril, Undersecretary of Tourism Promotion and Operations and technical secretary of the destination management organization.
