Mexico City — The federal government is negotiating the creation of a tourism development in Quintana Roo, despite the absence of a management program governing the use of natural resources within the Protected Natural Area where the Calica mine and port are located.
The lack of a management plan for the area, which is critical for regulating the exploitation and conservation of natural resources, remains unresolved as discussions about the future of the site continue between the government and the company Vulcan Materials.
President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration has previously stated that Vulcan Materials cannot continue its mining exploitation at the Calica site and has expressed the possibility of developing a tourism project in the zone. The government is also analyzing the potential purchase of the mine and port.
