Man drives himself to hospital after Cancún shooting

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Violence once again struck the marginalized areas of Cancún as a man severely injured by gunfire survived an ambush in the Villas Otoch Paraíso subdivision—one of the regions with the highest crime rates—and, despite the severity of his wounds, drove himself to a private hospital seeking medical attention.

Emergency Response at Hospital Azura

The incident occurred after 10 p.m. when the bleeding and disoriented man arrived at Hospital Azura, located in Supermanzana 25, between Sunyaxchén and Yaxchilán avenues. Medical personnel immediately activated emergency protocols and alerted authorities upon confirming he had gunshot wounds.

Municipal Police officers arrived at the scene in a patrol vehicle and located a white pickup truck in the hospital parking lot with at least three bullet impacts on the windshield, clear evidence of the attack’s brutality. The vehicle was cordoned off for investigation.

Attack in High-Crime Neighborhood

According to initial reports, the attack took place in Supermanzana 259, within the conflict-ridden Villas Otoch Paraíso subdivision—colloquially referred to as "Cancún’s favelas" due to its high levels of violence—when the man resisted a suspected robbery attempt.

Despite his critical injuries, he managed to drive to a first clinic on López Portillo Avenue, where he was denied medical care. Desperate, he then proceeded to Hospital Azura, where he finally received treatment.

Investigation Underway

The State Attorney General’s Office arrived shortly afterward with forensic personnel, who began collecting evidence from the attacked vehicle and initiated the case file.

The victim’s identity and current medical condition remain undisclosed, though it is believed his injuries could be life-threatening.

Renewed Criticism of Healthcare and Security Failures

The incident has reignited criticism over the inadequacy of emergency healthcare services and the pervasive insecurity in Cancún’s working-class neighborhoods, where daily reports of robberies, shootings, and executions are common.

Villas Otoch Paraíso continues to solidify its reputation as a hotspot in the Mexican Caribbean’s criminal landscape. Authorities have not confirmed any arrests or disclosed the exact motive behind the attack.
