Man Sentenced to 50 Years in Prison for 2020 Murder in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for a 2020 shooting that left one person dead and another seriously injured in the Misión del Carmen neighborhood.

Oswaldo López Arcos was convicted of aggravated homicide and attempted homicide following an attack on April 9, 2020, according to the State Prosecutor’s Office.

Investigators said López Arcos was with two people inside a vehicle when he asked them to get out to check an address. Once outside, he pulled out a firearm and shot both victims. One died from gunshot wounds, while the other sustained serious injuries.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that established López Arcos’s responsibility for the violent acts. After reviewing the evidence, the oral trial judge issued the 50-year prison sentence and ordered the defendant to pay 164,203 pesos in damages to the victims.

The ruling concludes the judicial process for a crime that occurred nearly six years ago in the municipality of Solidaridad.
