On Tuesday, March 25th, Guillermo Jorge "N" was sentenced to 48 years in prison for the femicide of a 25-year-old woman in Playa del Carmen. The Quintana Roo Prosecutor's Office announced the sentence, which was decided by a Trial Judge following a thorough review of the evidence.
The victim, originally from Querétaro, had moved to Playa del Carmen with aspirations to work and save money for her dream of living in Canada. She rented an apartment in the Colosio neighborhood, which had previously been occupied by Guillermo Jorge "N". Over time, he returned and asked to stay temporarily, to which she agreed. On June 14th, 2019, after leaving her job in Tulum, she met with Guillermo to attend a farewell party at a local bar. The last sighting of her alive was at 3:58 a.m. on June 15th. Days later, her remains were discovered in a suitcase and bags a few blocks from her home.
Following the crime, Guillermo Jorge "N" evaded authorities using a false identity and traveled through several states. He was eventually apprehended in Oaxaca in June 2022. In addition to his prison sentence, the Trial Judge ordered him to pay a fine of 236,572 pesos, 513,400 pesos in material damage compensation, and 207,753.19 pesos for damages.
This case underscores the commitment of the authorities to bring perpetrators of femicide to justice and to provide closure for the victims' families. The State Attorney General's Office continues to focus on addressing and preventing such crimes.
