Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A man, believed to be homeless and suffering from mental health issues, jumped from a vehicular bridge on Boulevard Playa del Carmen near the intersection with Avenida Luis Donaldo Colosio around midday. The incident left the individual severely injured and lying on the asphalt below, surrounded by a pool of blood.
Eyewitnesses Describe the Incident
Bystanders and motorists traveling both on the bridge and the adjacent roadway watched in disbelief as the man, estimated to be around 40 years old, climbed the structure. Despite shouts urging him not to jump, he proceeded to leap, landing violently on the pavement. Witnesses reported that the man had previously attempted to climb the same bridge, with some claiming they had reported these incidents to the Secretary of Citizen Security, though no follow-up action was taken.
Emergency Response and Medical Condition
Local residents and nearby workers quickly cordoned off the area using buckets and other materials before calling emergency services. Paramedics from the Emergency Medical Rescue Unit (ERUM) and officers from Citizen Security arrived promptly. The victim was found with a fractured skull, exposed bone, and additional injuries to his chest and arms. Medical personnel stabilized him on-site before transporting him to the general hospital in critical condition.
Fatal Outcome
By the time this edition went to press, sources confirmed the man had succumbed to his injuries. His body was transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) as an unidentified individual.
The incident has raised concerns about the lack of intervention for individuals exhibiting erratic behavior in public spaces, despite prior reports to authorities.
