Cancún, Quintana Roo — A 57-year-old man was found dead in his apartment in Cancún’s Paseos del Mar neighborhood Wednesday morning, with injuries suggesting he was attacked with a machete.
Neighbors discovered the body around 7 a.m. after reporting an unconscious person with multiple wounds inside apartment 303 of building O on Isla Capri Street. Paramedics responded and confirmed the man had no vital signs.
Police officers from the Municipal Public Security and Transit Department cordoned off the apartment building to begin investigating the violent death.
The victim, identified only as Esteban, was originally from Tabasco state. Preliminary reports indicate he suffered sharp force injuries to the head and neck, likely from a machete, causing death from traumatic brain injury and hypovolemic shock due to blood loss.
Forensic experts from the Medical Examiner’s Office examined the crime scene at the apartment located in Block 108, Lot 6, in Supermanzana 259. The body was found in the living room area.
One line of investigation suggests the victim may have been involved in an altercation with someone who was with him in the apartment, possibly during the early morning hours before the body was discovered.
The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office, while State Prosecutor’s Office investigators began procedures to clarify the circumstances of the murder and locate the suspected perpetrator.
