Police tape at a crime scene in Espita, Yucatan

Espita, Yucatan — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who died hours after being taken into custody by Espita municipal police, a case that has sparked outrage among local residents.

The man was arrested Tuesday afternoon during a police operation in which, according to various accounts, there may have been excessive use of force. After his detention, he was taken to the municipal jail, where he remained in police custody.

Hours later, he was found dead. People close to the case said the body showed apparent injuries, though officials have not yet confirmed the cause of death.

Relatives are demanding a thorough and impartial investigation to clarify what happened during the arrest, the time he was held, and the circumstances of his death.

The Espita city council, led by Mayor Mario Sanchez, has not issued an official statement or said whether the officers involved have been suspended pending the investigation.

Unverified allegations against some municipal police officers have circulated on social media, but authorities have not confirmed them.

The Yucatan State Prosecutor’s Office will conduct the investigation, perform an autopsy, determine the cause of death, and assess whether any criminal or administrative liability exists on the part of the officers involved.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities are expected to release updates in the coming hours.
