Mahahual, QR — A roadblock established by angry residents outside the city of Mahahual has been removed after negotiations with local government representatives. The traffic obstruction, which disrupted the highway connecting Chetumal and Xcalak, began shortly before noon on Wednesday as residents demanded discussions over recent evictions they claim were illegal.
Protest Over Alleged Illegal Evictions
The group blocked the highway in protest of forced evictions, which they argue were conducted unlawfully. Residents stated the blockade was intended to pressure authorities after failed attempts to engage in dialogue.
At approximately 3:00 p.m., Nabil Eljure Terraza, the state’s deputy secretary, arrived to meet with protesters. Fernando Hernández Peña, the protest leader, negotiated with Eljure Terraza, resulting in an agreement regarding eviction operations led by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
Government Pledges Oversight and Support
Eljure Terraza clarified that while the FGE operates autonomously and evictions cannot be halted, the state government will monitor proceedings to ensure legal compliance. He confirmed four ongoing land disputes in Mahahual involving private property rights.
The deputy secretary assured that those affected by lawful evictions would receive support. Additionally, the state government committed to expediting land regularization and improving basic services in the area.
Road Repairs and Maintenance Promised
Both parties agreed that the State Secretariat of Public Works (SEOP) would conduct road cleaning, maintenance, and repair work in the affected zone.
The protest followed a contentious overnight eviction in Tulum, where homes were demolished, leaving residents displaced.
