Cancún, Quintana Roo — Firefighters responding to a blaze at an abandoned hospital in Cancún made a grisly discovery: two charred bodies amid the rubble. The incident occurred in a densely populated area of the Benito Juárez municipality, reigniting concerns about security at the long-shuttered facility.
Authorities Investigate the Scene
According to official reports, emergency services received a call around 5:00 p.m. on Monday regarding a fire at the hospital, located in Supermanzana 65. Fire crews arrived promptly to extinguish the flames engulfing part of the derelict building, which had become an informal shelter for unhoused individuals in recent years.
After suppressing the fire, rescue personnel entered the structure and, while clearing debris, uncovered two fully charred human bodies lying on the ground. The discovery prompted an immediate request for support from the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office.
Forensic experts and investigative agents cordoned off the area, collected evidence, and removed the remains. The bodies were transported to the Medical Forensic Service (SEMEFO) as unidentified individuals, where further analysis will determine their identities and precise causes of death.
Community Raises Alarm Over Safety Concerns
Local residents reported that the abandoned hospital has been a persistent security risk since its closure, frequently occupied by unauthorized individuals. Authorities have not ruled out any lines of inquiry, including the possibility that the fire was deliberately set to conceal evidence of violence.
Local media outlets have speculated that the victims may have been low-level drug dealers executed on-site. No arrests or suspects have been announced as of yet, though the Attorney General’s Office continues to investigate.
A History of Violence at the Site
This is not the first violent incident linked to the abandoned hospital. In June 2023, two individuals were found dead inside a water tank in the building’s kitchen area, both showing signs of stab wounds. One victim had been listed as a missing person by the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office. At the time, perpetrators set part of the structure ablaze to draw authorities to the scene—a tactic mirroring Monday’s events.
The case remains under investigation as officials work to uncover the circumstances behind the latest tragedy.
