LPGA Returns to Mexico with Top Golfers in Riviera Maya

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) is set to return to the Mexican Caribbean with the MÉXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, featuring more than 144 world-class golfers. The announcement was made by Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Secretary of Tourism for Quintana Roo, during a press conference, highlighting the event’s role in reinforcing the region’s global reputation as a premier sports tourism destination.

A New Era of Tourism in Quintana Roo

Under the leadership of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, Quintana Roo is experiencing a “New Era of Tourism,” with a strategic focus on diversifying offerings to ensure prosperity reaches all households. The LPGA tournament, marking the association’s return to Mexico after an eight-year absence, underscores this vision.

SEDETUR Secretary Cueto Riestra emphasized the growing prominence of sports tourism in Quintana Roo, citing the LPGA as a flagship event that attracts elite athletes worldwide. The tournament will take place from May 22 to 25 at the El Camaleón golf course in Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, with a prize pool of $2.5 million USD.

Elite Participation and Cultural Showcases

The field includes 144 golfers, among them Mexican stars Gaby López and Isabella Fierro. The event also features the MÉXICO brand as its official naming partner, symbolizing the country’s commitment to sports and global tourism promotion.

Beyond the competition, attendees will enjoy live concerts. Bacilos, the Latin pop group, will perform on May 24, followed by Jesse & Joy on May 25.

Institutional and Private Collaboration

Cueto Riestra thanked organizers for choosing Quintana Roo, noting the state’s infrastructure, air connectivity, and service quality as key factors in hosting world-class events. The tournament represents a collaboration between tourism, culture, music, and sports in one of the world’s most admired destinations.
