Akumal, Quintana Roo — A lightning strike ignited the tip of a thatched palapa covering the event hall at the Bahía Príncipe hotel in Akumal on Monday night, but the fire went out on its own and no injuries were reported.
The bolt hit during a thunderstorm, immediately sending smoke and flames from the top of the large palapa. Rain had soaked the wood and palm thatch, which prevented the fire from spreading.
Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the fire already extinguished. Crews used a telescopic ladder to climb to the top of the palapa and rule out any remaining hot spots.
The blaze caused only material damage to the wooden and palm-thatch structure.
