Cancún, Quintana Roo — More than 900 attendees and representatives from 11 countries gathered in Cancún for the Latin American Mobility Forum “Cities in Motion,” which concluded on Friday after two days of discussions on sustainable transport, road safety, and urban mobility innovation.
Organized by the Mexican Association of Mobility Authorities (AMAM) and hosted by the Quintana Roo state government through its mobility institute IMOVEQROO, the forum featured four keynote speeches and five strategic thematic areas. Experts from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Nicaragua, Spain, Germany, Peru, the United States, England, Chile, and Paraguay participated in panels and workshops.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa led the opening event, stating that mobility should be understood as a right that drives well-being and development. “Mobility allows more people to access opportunities, services, and quality of life,” she said, emphasizing a human-centered approach to public decisions.
Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of IMOVEQROO, announced during the closing ceremony that the forum solidifies Cancún and Quintana Roo as strategic venues for international dialogue on sustainable transportation. “This exchange of experiences and best practices will help strengthen the state’s strategic projects, promote more efficient transport systems, and advance toward regional integration schemes,” he said.
The forum included technical panels on sustainable transport infrastructure, public transport business models, road safety in the era of micromobility, governance and financing in Latin America, regional mobility and rail integration, gender perspective in mobility, electromobility and decarbonization of passenger transport, and international case studies such as TransMilenio’s 25 years of operation.
Participants included representatives from organizations such as the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Bank, ITDP Mexico, GIZ, BANOBRAS, and ANPACT, along with state and municipal authorities from across Mexico. The event also attracted over 200 university students from Quintana Roo who participated as change-makers.
