Kukulcán Interchange Hits 70% as Cancún Delivery Slips to December

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Kukulcán interchange is roughly 70% complete, but its completion date has slipped again. After an inspection on Sunday, the Quintana Roo state government said it expects the link to the Nichupté Bridge to be finished in December, while warning that rainfall could stretch the work into January 2027.

The new timetable revises the projection released in May by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), which at the time placed the interchange’s completion in October of this year. Even if the December estimate holds, delivery would come at least two months later than that target.

The 1.92-kilometer structure is designed to organize the entry and exit of vehicles between the Nichupté Bridge and Boulevard Kukulcán, one of the points of greatest traffic pressure in the hotel zone. The state report issued Sunday put the investment at more than 500 million pesos; in July, the SICT reported a figure of 484 million. The reports reviewed do not explain the difference between the two amounts.

On the construction fronts, foundation work continues along with the assembly of columns, piers, footings, beams and slabs. The elevated structure is already visible above the hotel corridor. Below ground, crews are also working on drainage and drinking water networks, tasks that the state government says have required more time because of their complexity.

Governor Mara Lezama said the project began in April and maintained that, if working conditions hold as planned, it could be finished in December. That date remains a projection, contingent on progress on the outstanding work and on the behavior of the rains.

The interchange is a necessary piece for the Nichupté Bridge’s connection to the hotel zone to work as designed. Until it is completed, traffic in the area remains subject to construction maneuvers.

The next decisive question is whether the remaining 30% can be carried out during the final quarter of the year without another adjustment to the schedule.
