Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The body of journalist Melvin García, 57, was discovered in a rented room in the Adolfo López Mateos neighborhood on the island of Cozumel, Quintana Roo. Preliminary reports indicate that neighbors alerted authorities after detecting foul odors emanating from the property on Monday, July 7.
Discovery and Initial Investigation
The discovery occurred at a residence located on Avenida 45, between Calle 3 Sur and Adolfo Rosado Salas. Upon receiving the emergency call, municipal police and officials from the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) arrived at the scene and confirmed the presence of a body in an advanced state of decomposition.
While initial reports suggest García may have died by hanging, authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. No lines of inquiry, including the possibility of homicide, have been ruled out.
Background and Career
Melvin García worked as a journalist in both Cozumel and Mérida, Yucatán. At the time of his death, he was reportedly employed as a commission agent, though his exact occupation remains unconfirmed.
García was best known as the author of the book Mayra, su vida terminó, su historia comenzó (Mayra, Her Life Ended, Her Story Began), which linked former Quintana Roo Governor Félix González Canto of the PRI party to a crime committed in Cozumel. Following the book’s publication, García alleged political persecution and left the municipality for several years before returning to the island months ago.
Community and Professional Reactions
The area where García’s body was found was cordoned off as FGE officials began their investigation to determine whether the death was a suicide or a homicide. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the case, which has drawn significant attention in Cozumel.
Colleagues and citizens expressed condolences and called for clarity regarding the circumstances of García’s death.
García’s book, Mayra, su vida terminó, su historia comenzó, remains a notable work in the region for its controversial allegations against the former governor.
The investigation continues.
