Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde speaking at a press conference about infrastructure projects

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde announced an ambitious package of 27 public works projects set to shape the municipality’s development in 2026, focusing on improving infrastructure, strengthening services, and enhancing residents’ quality of life.

Strategic Projects to Modernize the Island

During a press conference, the mayor detailed that the plan includes actions across various fronts, from urban mobility to cultural and sports spaces. Key projects involve underground utility work in the central zone, the second phase of rehabilitation for Avenida Rueda Medina, and paving of several roadways.

The package also includes remodeling the Malecón Oriente, constructing a new Casa de la Cultura, rehabilitating Tortugranja, and renovating the Ariel “El Picho Magaña” children’s baseball field.

Rueda Medina as Urban Transformation Hub

A central element of the program is the comprehensive intervention on Avenida Rueda Medina. Gómez Ricalde explained that once work by the company Aguakan concludes, paving will resume from the Chedraui pedestrian crossing to the Fifth Naval Region.

This aims to complete the modernization of the entire stretch from the Fisherman’s Monument to the Curva de Mundaca, connecting with work done in previous years.

Culture and Public Spaces Prioritized

The package highlights the construction of a new Casa de la Cultura, which will feature administrative areas, music and dance classrooms, painting spaces, a virtual library, an auditorium, and an outdoor terrace.

Improvements to community spaces include expanding the Plaza Ejidatarios, considered the first public gathering point in Ciudad Mujeres.

Projects for the Continental Zone

The infrastructure plan includes significant actions in the Continental Zone, where the first Municipal Cemetery is projected for construction, along with rehabilitating the potable water system to supply neighborhoods such as Jerusalén, Tamayo May, Rancherita, Zona Urbana, and La Cristiana.

Additional complementary works are planned for the Punta Sam Fire Station and expanding the Public Security building in that area.

Future Outlook

The mayor stated that this package addresses both current needs and the long-term vision for the municipality.

“These are projects that directly impact people’s daily lives and help consolidate Isla Mujeres as an organized and competitive destination,” she said.
