Cancun, Quintana Roo — The Crystal Blue, a boat from Isla Mujeres captained by Sam R. Hankins, won first place in the 15th edition of the Don Diego de la Peña Sport Fishing Tournament, held over the weekend in Cancun.
The tournament, organized by Asociados Náuticos Quintana Roo (ANQR), brought together 41 boats from Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Aventuras, Puerto Morelos, and the Yucatan ports of Progreso and Tixcocob, as well as three from Mexico City.
Crystal Blue accumulated 3,572.55 points, beating the Chanokkk from Puerto Progreso, captained by Gerardo “Gary” Rivas, which scored 3,243.40 points. Third place went to the Keen M I, also from Isla Mujeres, with 3,150.55 points under Captain Anthony Mendillo.
A key feature of the tournament is its emphasis on conservation. This year, participants released nine sailfish and 11 juvenile dorado, contributing to the preservation of Quintana Roo’s marine resources.
