Isla Mujeres Announces 21st International Fishing Tournament With Over 900,000 Pesos in Prizes

Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gomez Ricalde presents details of the 21st International Fishing Tournament

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The 21st edition of the Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña International Fishing Tournament will offer more than 900,000 pesos in prizes, with 360,000 pesos going to the first-place winner, officials announced this week.

Mayor Atenea Gomez Ricalde presented the tournament details, emphasizing that the event scheduled for May 22-24 represents more than just a sports competition. “We’re working to ensure Isla Mujeres continues to shine as a world-class destination,” Gomez Ricalde said, noting that the arrival of national and international competitors directly benefits the hotel, restaurant, and nautical services sectors.

The total prize pool of over 900,000 pesos positions the tournament as one of the most competitive and attractive fishing events in the region. Sport fishing in Quintana Roo has experienced significant growth, with this tournament serving as a flagship event for the discipline.

The three-day schedule includes a traditional Captains’ Dinner on May 22, followed by intensive fishing sessions on May 23 and 24. The closing ceremony and awards presentation will take place on the afternoon of May 24 at Playa Centro, known for its white sand and crystal-clear waters.

Gomez Ricalde highlighted the tournament’s role in promoting sports tourism as a tool for economic diversification. By attracting high-profile anglers, the municipality ensures quality occupancy and organic promotion of the island’s natural beauty.

The mayor extended an open invitation to residents, fishing enthusiasts, and tourists to join what she described as a “great celebration” that strengthens community ties and honors the island’s maritime identity.
