Tulum, Quintana Roo — A man suspected of driving under the influence crashed his motorcycle in Tulum’s La Veleta neighborhood Thursday night, losing control and slamming into a central median.
The incident occurred around 7 South Street at the intersection with 5 South Street. The motorcyclist, approximately 30 years old, veered off course and struck the median divider, leaving the motorcycle on the grassy strip and the rider with multiple injuries.
Emergency responders reported the man showed signs of severe alcohol intoxication, complicating rescue efforts as he initially refused medical attention and was uncooperative.
Red Cross paramedics and civil protection personnel responded to the scene to stabilize the situation and assess the injured man’s condition. Municipal traffic officers also arrived to document the incident and determine liability.
Authorities decided to transport the motorcyclist to a public hospital for medical care. When they couldn’t locate family members to take responsibility, they took him into custody to ensure he received continued medical attention.
No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the crash, with damage limited to the motorcyclist and his vehicle. The incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving, a leading cause of traffic accidents in the municipality.
