Kanasín, Yucatán — The Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit) and the National Housing Commission (Conavi) are set to construct 50,000 homes in Yucatán during the current six-year presidential term. This initiative addresses the housing needs of an estimated 170,000 families in the state who lack property of their own.
The "Vivienda para el Bienestar" (Housing for Well-being) program will build 40,000 houses in the municipalities of Umán, Mérida, Kanasín, Progreso, Tizimín, and Ticul. This figure will be supplemented by an additional 10,000 housing units projected by Conavi, bringing the total to 50,000.
Supervised Construction and Expanded Goals
The announcement followed a supervisory visit by Infonavit's Director General, Octavio Romero Oropeza, and Yucatán Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal (referred to in the article as 'Huacho Díaz Mena') to the "Los Girasoles" development in Kanasín. This development, part of the Vivienda para el Bienestar program, is currently under construction and will comprise 2,488 homes.
Subsequently, the officials visited the "San Marcos" plots in Mérida and "Punta Cruz Eco" in Umán to monitor the construction of houses and apartments. These units are 60 square meters in size and include services and green areas, designed to improve the quality of life for Yucatán families.
Governor Díaz Mena stated that with the 40,000 actions from the program and the 10,000 from Conavi, the goal of 50,000 homes will be achieved. He emphasized the program's significance, affirming, "Vivienda para el Bienestar is a program that symbolizes the transformation promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, a transformation with a human face that places workers and their families at the center of decisions."
He reiterated that housing is not a privilege but a human right, making dignified homes a priority for both the Federal Government and the Government of the Maya Renacimiento. The governor also asserted that the housing sector is fundamental for reducing inequality gaps that Yucatán has suffered for decades, which have limited access to well-paid jobs and dignified living conditions. "Today we are moving forward to offer that certainty," he emphasized.
Current Construction and Future Projects
For his part, Infonavit Director Octavio Romero Oropeza provided specific figures, explaining that the program's goal was increased from 9,500 to 40,000 homes—four times the original plan. He added that more proposals are still being received and could be incorporated in the future.
He detailed that 13,834 homes are currently under construction with an investment of 8,275 million pesos. These social-interest houses are designed for workers earning between one and two minimum wages. Each unit features two bedrooms, a living-dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and service area, and is located within developments that include basic infrastructure such as potable water, electricity, paved streets, and community spaces.
The 13,834 homes under construction are distributed as follows: 5,664 in Umán, 3,552 in Mérida, 2,488 in Kanasín, 1,184 in Progreso, 866 in Tizimín, and 80 in Ticul.
Romero Oropeza also anticipated that before the end of the year, the signing for the construction of an additional 12,768 homes in Kanasín, Ucú, and Mérida will be pursued. He thanked the Governor and the municipal governments for their support in advancing these projects.
The Infonavit Director of Housing, Orlando Camarillo Ruiz, and the Municipal Treasurer of Kanasín, Jorge Iván May Collí, were also present at the press conference. They highlighted the economic and social impact this initiative will have on the state.
