Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Quintana Roo is reinforcing its support for breastfeeding mothers during World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1 to 7. Under the theme “Let’s Prioritize Breastfeeding by Building Sustainable Support Systems,” the institute aims to raise awareness about the practice’s benefits and dispel persistent myths.

Strengthening Awareness and Support

María Anabel Martínez Benítez, the delegation coordinator for public health nursing at IMSS, emphasized that the week serves as an opportunity to educate the public on breastfeeding’s advantages while addressing misconceptions.

“Some still believe breast milk isn’t enough and that formula supplementation is necessary. In reality, a mother’s body produces exactly what the baby needs—from colostrum in the first days to mature milk that changes in color, taste, and quantity over time,” Martínez Benítez explained.

She stressed that breast milk should be the sole source of nutrition for infants during their first six months, as it provides essential nutrients, immune defenses, and hydration for optimal development. Complementary feeding may begin afterward, but only under medical guidance.

Benefits for Mothers and Families

Martínez Benítez highlighted that breastfeeding also benefits mothers by reducing the risk of breast cancer, aiding postpartum uterine recovery, and supporting weight loss.

“Breastfeeding also represents significant economic savings for families by eliminating the need for formula, bottles, and related products,” she added.

Recognizing the challenges faced by working mothers, IMSS offers training on techniques for expressing, storing, and providing breast milk—even when away from home. Proper storage methods, including room temperature, refrigeration, or freezing, are emphasized to preserve milk’s nutritional properties.

Workplace Support and Public Health Impact

The institute acknowledged companies that have established lactation rooms—equipped with refrigerators, comfortable seating, and privacy—to support breastfeeding employees.

Martínez Benítez underscored that promoting and protecting breastfeeding is a key strategy in combating childhood obesity, a major public health concern in Mexico.

IMSS Quintana Roo invites the public to participate in informational activities and workshops held across its facilities during the week, aiming to build sustainable support networks for mothers and children.
