Cancún, Mexico — Cancún has declared itself prepared for the 2025 hurricane season, with 82 temporary shelters capable of housing 18,600 people, including a designated "pet-friendly" space at Villas Otoch for evacuees with animals. The capacity expands further with 76 hotels authorized as hurricane shelters for tourists and staff, reinforcing the city’s civil protection strategy for the season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
Preparedness Amid Rising Risks
Mayor Ana Paty Peralta inaugurated the Specialized Operational Committee for Hydrometeorological Phenomena ahead of the hurricane season, emphasizing the need for timely action and prevention.
“We are a resilient and united community with a strong culture of preparedness,” she stated, urging residents, businesses, and institutions to remain vigilant.
The emergency response includes 1,197 personnel from Civil Protection, Firefighters, Public Safety, Traffic, and Public Services. Preventive measures such as drain cleaning, tree trimming, tarp removal, and the safeguarding of over 1,900 sea turtle eggs across 16 nests have also been implemented to mitigate risks from heavy rains.
Resources and Coordination
Antonio Riveroll Ribbon, Director of Civil Protection, confirmed that the municipality has the necessary equipment—including tools, mattresses, blankets, generators, and water pumps—to handle emergencies. He added that all subcommittees, such as tourism, health, transportation, temporary shelters, and rescue, are operating in coordination.
The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) forecasts 13 to 17 tropical cyclones in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, with a 13.3% probability of direct impact on Quintana Roo, the second-highest risk level in Mexico. Projections include:
- 7–9 tropical storms
- 3–4 Category 1 or 2 hurricanes
- 3–4 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5).
The city’s comprehensive readiness aims to safeguard both residents and visitors during the heightened storm activity expected this season.
