Cancun, Quintana Roo — Students from the University of the Caribbean will take part in the 17th edition of the Hungary in Cancun Cultural Festival, scheduled for June 4-6, 2026. This year’s event holds special significance as it marks the centennial of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Hungary, serving as a bridge of friendship and cooperation through art, academia, and gastronomy. All activities are free and open to the public.
For the seventh time, the University of the Caribbean will host the gathering, which expects to attract more than 400 people over two days. An additional event at the City Theater will bring together 600 participants to share Hungarian culture with the Caribbean region.
Xóchitl Carmona Bareño, rector of the university, emphasized that the festival is a key component of students’ comprehensive education. She also highlighted the strong relationship with the European country through an academic mobility agreement that enables annual student exchanges and scholarships in science and culture.
Chef Guillermo Álvarez Estrada, along with a team of more than 30 gastronomy students, will prepare a tasting for the opening day. The sample will include over 1,000 canapés based on traditional Hungarian recipes refined locally, accompanied by a selection of wines.
Dr. Emöke Ujj, director and founder of the festival, noted that this year’s edition celebrates 100 years of dialogue and collaboration between the two nations. The artistic lineup features prominent national and international performers as well as local talent from Quintana Roo and Yucatán.
The festival is supported by the Embassy of Hungary in Mexico, the Municipality of Benito Juárez, the Honorary Consulate of Hungary, and the University of the Caribbean’s Student Development Department.
A major highlight will be the world premiere of “Magyar Mozaik,” a work by contemporary composer Paul Csige, reaffirming the festival’s commitment to modern musical creation and the dissemination of works by masters such as Franz Liszt, Béla Bartók, and Zoltán Kodály.
