Cancún, Quintana Roo — A worker was killed Monday afternoon when a speeding driver struck him on Bulevar Luis Donaldo Colosio and then fled the scene, leaving the body on the asphalt.
The crash occurred near Plaza Cumbres on the lanes heading toward Cancún International Airport. Initial reports said the victim was trying to cross from the side of a gas station to the central median so he could reach the opposite side of the avenue and catch transport into the city center.
A vehicle, apparently a BMW, was traveling at excessive speed when it hit the pedestrian, throwing him several meters. When he landed on the roadway, the same vehicle ran over him, according to the first accounts.
The driver fled with his vehicle at around 6:15 p.m. local time.
Officers from the Traffic Department closed that stretch of Colosio Boulevard and diverted vehicles onto the lateral lanes that serve as the entrance to Plaza Cumbres, causing significant congestion in the area.
A pedestrian bridge stands about 200 meters from the crash site, though people trying to reach the other side of the avenue do not always use it.
