Cancun, Quintana Roo — The National Meteorological Service (SMN) forecasts heavy rains, strong winds, and possible hail for the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, April 2.
The agency reported that a trough in the upper levels of the atmosphere will gradually move over the Yucatan Peninsula and the Caribbean Sea, bringing unsettled weather.
Weather in the Yucatan Peninsula
The SMN predicts partly to mostly cloudy skies throughout the day, with localized heavy rains in areas of Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. These storms may be accompanied by lightning and possible hail, and could cause puddles and flooding.
Temperatures will be mild in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Winds from the east and northeast are expected at 20 to 30 km/h, with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h. Waves of 1 to 2 meters in height are forecast along the coasts of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Weather in the Gulf of Mexico
Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected during the day in the Gulf region, with showers in Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Tabasco. These showers may also include lightning and possible hail. Morning temperatures will be cool to mild across the region, and very cold in mountainous areas of Veracruz.
Afternoon temperatures will be warm to hot across the region, and very hot in parts of Tamaulipas. Winds from the south at 20 to 30 km/h with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h are forecast for Tamaulipas, with variable winds gusting 30 to 50 km/h in Tabasco and southerly winds of similar intensity in Veracruz.
Weather in the South Pacific
In the South Pacific region, partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected with localized heavy rains in Chiapas, which could cause puddles, flooding, and landslides. Showers are forecast for Oaxaca, also accompanied by lightning and possible hail, with isolated rains in Guerrero.
Morning temperatures will be cool to mild; afternoon temperatures will be hot to very hot across the region, with a heat wave in Guerrero (northwest, central, and south) and Oaxaca (central, east, and southeast). Variable winds of 10 to 20 km/h with gusts of 30 to 50 km/h are expected in Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.
