Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Grupo Posadas has acquired land to build an all-inclusive hotel in Bacalar, a move that local officials say will boost tourism but has reignited debates over environmental conservation in this Pueblo Mágico.
Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez confirmed the investment, which will be located in the coastal area near Cenote Azul, one of the destination’s fastest-growing spots. He stated that the project aims to strengthen Bacalar’s tourism offerings and enhance its competitiveness in national and international markets.
The hotel complex is planned near the Hotel Laguna Bacalar, extending toward the Coquitos area. Construction will be situated between the coastal highway and the federal highway to avoid building directly on the lagoon’s shoreline, though investors will have access to the water due to owning property facing the lagoon.
The potential arrival of an all-inclusive hotel in Bacalar has generated excitement in the tourism sector but also raised questions. Until now, the destination has focused on boutique and low-impact environmental developments, making this project a significant shift in its growth model.
The announcement has reopened discussions about balancing economic expansion with the conservation of the Laguna de Bacalar, considered one of the main natural attractions in southern Quintana Roo.
Since 2023, Grupo Posadas has been expanding its presence in the Mexican Caribbean with projects like Live Aqua Riviera Cancún and Grand Fiesta Americana Riviera Cancún All Inclusive Resort & Spa, involving investments exceeding $300 million. In Bacalar, the project is still in the planning phase, but the land acquisition marks a key step toward its eventual development.
The municipal government emphasized that such investments could create jobs and strengthen the local economy, provided growth remains orderly.
