Cancún, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has announced an investment of 11.5 million pesos for the rehabilitation of the athlete villas at the Centro Estatal Deportivo de Alto Rendimiento (CEDAR) in Cancún. The facility serves as a residential and training hub for high-performance athletes in the state.
Funding and Project Scope
The renovation is being carried out through the federal Fiscal Incentive Program for High-Performance Sports (EFIDEPORTE). Governor Lezama emphasized that the funds belong to the people, not the government.
"This is where Quintana Roo’s champions are formed. Our athletes live, train, and dream here, which is why we are rehabilitating these high-performance villas," stated Lezama, the first female governor of Quintana Roo.
During an inspection tour, Jacobo Arzate Hop, president of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ), reported that the project is 60% complete and is expected to be finished and inaugurated by October.
Rehabilitation Details
The upgrades include:
- Installation of sanitary fixtures, closets, and bathroom coverings
- Air conditioning units
- Interior and exterior wall coatings
- New electrical wiring, lighting, outlets, and switches
The improvements will benefit approximately 80 resident athletes.
Broader Investments in CEDAR Cancún
The current administration has invested over 80 million pesos in CEDAR Cancún, including:
- Rehabilitation of the synthetic turf field
- Construction of a wastewater treatment system and potable water cistern
- Roof repairs for training facilities
- Installation of a new roof for the semi-Olympic pool
Government’s Commitment to Sports and Social Welfare
Governor Lezama reiterated her administration’s focus on sports as a tool for social cohesion and youth development.
"In this humanist government with a feminist heart, promoting sports also means caring for health. It means giving children and young people the tools to avoid self-destructive behaviors and reach their full potential," she said.
The project follows similar upgrades at CEDAR Chetumal, reinforcing the state’s commitment to athlete welfare.
"This is what our new way of governing is about—transparent use of resources. Our athletes matter, and they will have fully renovated villas," Lezama concluded.
State Deputy Eric Arcila Arjona also attended the inspection tour.
