Playa del Carmen Taxi Drivers Trained for Tourism Excellence

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — In a concerted effort to enhance service quality for both visitors and residents, Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado led a ceremony awarding certification to tourism service providers and operators from the “Lázaro Cárdenas del Río” Taxi Union. The event, held at the New Municipal Palace Esplanade, marked a collaboration between the Quintana Roo Institute for Labor Training (ICATQR) and the local government.

Elevating Service Standards

The initiative recognized dozens of taxi drivers who successfully completed training programs in service quality, customer care, and tourism-oriented English. The goal is to raise local transportation standards, strengthen the destination’s appeal, and solidify Playa del Carmen as a benchmark for visitor service excellence.

In her address, Mayor Estefanía Mercado emphasized the importance of professionalizing all tourism-related sectors: “Taxi drivers are the first smile our visitors see and often the last farewell before they depart,” she stated. “You carry the history, warmth, and spirit of our city. This training ensures visitors take with them the best of Playa del Carmen—its people.” She also thanked ICATQR and the union for fostering this strategic partnership.

The program is part of a broader strategy to transform the local tourism model, prioritizing inclusivity, sustainability, and dignified working conditions for service providers. “Through the efforts of every taxi driver, we are building a more prosperous, fair, and opportunity-rich Playa del Carmen,” Mercado concluded.

Union and Government Collaboration

Natividad Díaz, Secretary of Training and Development for the union, highlighted the initiative as a decisive step toward professionalizing the sector. She acknowledged the municipal government’s support, which has been instrumental in extending such programs across the city.

The event also featured the branding of 100 union vehicles, reinforcing the municipality’s visual identity and tourism image.

The initiative reflects Playa del Carmen’s commitment to sustainable tourism growth and service excellence, positioning the city as a leading destination in Mexico’s competitive tourism landscape.
