Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The government of Mayor Estefanía Mercado showcased significant progress in Playa del Carmen’s tourism sector during the Second Ordinary Session of the Tourism Consultative Council. The meeting, led by Municipal Tourism Secretary Estefanía Hernández Flores on behalf of Mercado, outlined strategic initiatives aimed at solidifying the city’s reputation as a world-class destination.

Key Achievements and Upcoming Projects

The session highlighted results from actions implemented in the first half of the year, including improvements to the Tourist Assistance and Protection Center (CAPTA) modules, the integration of emergency protocols with Civil Protection, and enhanced coordination with Tourist Police, ADO, and the Tren Maya to provide visitors with a seamless experience.

A major announcement was the forthcoming installation of a CAPTA module at Playa del Carmen’s Tren Maya station. Authorities urged the business sector to promote these specialized services among tourists.

The council also unveiled the tourism event calendar for the second half of the year, featuring cultural festivals, sporting events, and sustainable experiences such as Tiburón Fest, the International Golf Tournament, Romance Playa, and the international fashion showcase Playa Fest and Fashion, the latter funded without public expenditure.

Collaborative Strategies and Sustainable Development

A joint promotion strategy titled Joyas de la Península was introduced, fostering collaboration between Playa del Carmen and Mérida to boost cultural and gastronomic tourism through shared campaigns, improved connectivity via ADO and Tren Maya, and coordinated agendas.

Progress on the Corredor de Cenotes project was detailed, alongside the development of micro-tourism routes focused on history, urban art, local identity, and pet-friendly experiences. These initiatives align with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Sector Professionalization and Security

The council reported that 120 taxi drivers have completed training in service quality and tourist English, earning the Taxi Certificado distinction under the Let’s Playa program.

Representatives from the Secretariat of Citizen Security emphasized their collaboration with the tourism sector in hiring processes, surveillance in high-traffic areas, and incident tracking. They acknowledged CAPTA’s critical role in visitor assistance.

The session concluded with the approval of presented reports and a renewed commitment to advancing inclusive, sustainable tourism that benefits visitors, businesses, and residents alike.
