Cozumel, Quintana Roo — With the goal of bringing the community closer to knowledge of the marine ecosystem and fostering awareness about the importance of its care, the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) held the "Between Fish and Corals" sunset snorkeling activity at Chankanaab Park. People of all ages, especially Cozumel children, participated in the guided tour.

The activity was organized by the Dirección de Conservación y Educación Ambiental (CEA). Its head, Rafael Chacón Díaz, highlighted that this type of experience allows the population to see the reef, fish, and marine life up close. He stated that, although Cozumel is located opposite the second largest reef barrier in the world, many people have not had the opportunity to observe it directly. This program seeks to provide them with that unique experience in the company of their families.

Rafael Chacón also explained that the FPMC has been developing a coral restoration program in Chankanaab for seven years, with positive results thanks to the constant monitoring and cleaning carried out by members of the volunteer group. He emphasized that by knowing the richness of the ecosystem, the population can understand the need to conserve it and transmit that message within their close circles.

For her part, the general director of the FPMC, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, framed this activity within the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. This agreement promotes the active participation of the community in the knowledge and care of the environment, under the premise that "what is known, is cared for."

The snorkeling session concluded with the satisfaction of the participants, who enjoyed the experience of contemplating the reef at sunset. With these actions, the FPMC reaffirms its commitment to sensitize the community about the importance of protecting the marine ecosystem, a fundamental pillar of Cozumel's natural heritage.
