Five Quintana Roo Mayors Seek Morena Federal District Posts

Politicians and mayors from Quintana Roo pose after registering for Morena federal district coordination posts ahead of the 2027 elections

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Morena’s contest for federal district coordination posts in Quintana Roo is taking shape, with at least nine candidates registered after the party closed its sign-up period on Sunday, October 4, including five sitting mayors.

The state map shows a stark contrast between districts crowded with contenders and others where participation remains unclear. District 04 has no officially confirmed aspirants.

Playa del Carmen: District 01

In District 01, headquartered in Playa del Carmen, Faviola Palma formalized her bid, saying she accepted the task “with the firm conviction that politics is only worthy when it is practiced with absolute honesty, professionalism and a vocation for service.”

While no definitive official list has been released, several candidates have posted proof of their registration on social media.

Six Contenders in Chetumal’s District 02

District 02, based in Chetumal, drew the most interest, with six aspirants: the mayors Diego Castañón Trejo of Tulum; Mary Hernández Solís of Felipe Carrillo Puerto; Erik Borges Yam of José María Morelos; and José Alfredo Contreras Méndez of Bacalar. Business leader Wilma del Carmen Contreras Canto and former lawmaker David Gómez Tox also registered.

Cancún and Isla Mujeres

In District 03, which covers Cancún and Isla Mujeres, Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde and Lourdes Latife Cardona Muza, the first councilwoman of Benito Juárez, both registered.

Gómez Ricalde announced she requested a leave of absence from her post on the night of Monday, October 5, to compete. “Rest assured that during this time Isla Mujeres is in very good hands, run by a great team, committed and close to the people, working every day with heart for the wellbeing of island families,” she said in a video posted to social media.

District 04 Still a Question Mark

District 04 remains a complete mystery, with no candidate registrations publicly known for the area. A final answer will have to wait for the official ruling of Morena’s National Elections Commission.

With that registration period closed, the party is expected to open its call for municipal presidency candidates on Wednesday, October 7.
