Cozumel Prison Expands Capacity by More Than 50% With 80 New Spaces

Newly renovated facilities at the Cozumel Social Reintegration Center in Quintana Roo, which added 80 spaces to hold 236 inmates

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel Social Reintegration Center, known as the Cereso, has expanded its capacity by more than 50 percent, adding 80 new spaces to the 156 it previously had for a total of 236.

The project also included renovations to the medical areas and the classrooms used for social reintegration programs, along with work on the perimeter fence and new housing modules for prison custody staff.

Quintana Roo Public Security Secretary Julio César Gómez Torres said the work required an investment of roughly 6 million pesos, plus the purchase of X-ray equipment to strengthen security screenings.

Gómez Torres said the measures are meant to tighten access controls, prevent prohibited objects from entering the facility and maintain order inside the prison.

With the expansion, the Cozumel Cereso has eliminated the overcrowding it had been facing and now has more room to house people in custody.
