Río Lagartos, Yucatán — A fisherman identified as Álvaro X. S., originally from the port of Progreso and traveling on the boat Cuauhtémoc 1, was found dead, floating in the sea off the coast of Río Lagartos, where he was rescued and handed over to authorities.

Fishermen from the port of Río Lagartos, in the eastern part of the state, discovered the body, which is presumed to correspond to the man mentioned, who had disappeared from the vessel he was traveling on since last Thursday around 6:00 a.m.

According to what was investigated, the boat Cuauhtémoc 1 did not have its radio in good condition, so the disappearance of the young man was not reported until Friday around 8:30 a.m., when the ship’s captain sent a WhatsApp message to the Port Authority to notify the emergency situation.

Witnesses to the events recounted that the young man tied a rope around his neck with a potala, or stone, attached to the end and threw himself into the sea, without his companions being able to do anything to rescue him. It was not until Sunday that the body was found floating off the coast of Río Lagartos by the crew of the boat Catalina.

The initial report from the seamen was that he was tied by his feet and hands to a potala, and they approached the body to rescue it and hand it over to the authorities.

On social media, some of the young man’s relatives asked the corresponding authorities to seek justice, considering it negligence on the part of the captain of the Cuauhtémoc 1 for having neglected his crew and for giving a late notice reporting the situation.

According to their explanation, the deceased fisherman set out on Wednesday morning aboard said vessel, whose captain is a man identified only as Cheo, and after they learned of the disappearance, they did not know anything more until they saw the case of the body found off Río Lagartos on social media.

It is worth mentioning that the mother of the now deceased filed a report with the State Attorney General’s Office on Thursday, reporting the disappearance of her son. Meanwhile, the crew of the Cuauhtémoc 1 has not given statements on the matter, and the corresponding investigations are being carried out.
