Cancún, Mexico — A fire broke out in a warehouse in Cancún's industrial zone on Sunday morning, prompting a large-scale mobilization of municipal firefighters, Civil Protection units, and local police.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Comalcalco Avenue, near the intersections of Andrés Quintana Roo and Chichén Itzá avenues. According to initial reports, the warehouse was being used to house heavy machinery, raising concerns that the fire could spread to nearby businesses.
Firefighters Forced Entry
Upon arrival, firefighters found the warehouse's main door locked and were forced to breach the entrance to gain access and combat the flames. Once inside, crews began suppression efforts and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent properties.
Although the blaze was brought under control quickly, the resulting damage to the facility's structure and the stored equipment was reported to be considerable.
Establishment Closed Down
Municipal Police secured the perimeter during the emergency to ensure the safety of onlookers and to facilitate the work of rescue crews. Following the incident, Civil Protection officials closed the warehouse, citing a failure to meet necessary safety conditions.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the fire but indicated that an electrical short circuit may have been the primary cause. Despite the scale of the incident, there were no reported injuries, with damage confined to material losses.
Authorities stated that investigations will continue to determine responsibility and to reinforce safety measures in similar establishments.
