Fire Destroys 60-70 Businesses in Oaxaca’s Punta Zicatela Tourist Zone

Fire damage at Punta Zicatela beach in Oaxaca, Mexico

Punta Zicatela, Oaxaca — A fire destroyed between 60 and 70 businesses, including restaurants, palapas, cabins, and small shops, early Thursday morning in Punta Zicatela, one of Oaxaca’s main tourist destinations. Some owners reported total losses.

The blaze started in a palapa on the main street near the beach in Punta Zicatela, part of the municipality of Santa María Colotepec, and spread to other establishments.

The State Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCyGR) reported no injuries or fatalities. Officials said they do not yet know the cause of the fire and that authorities will conduct investigations to determine its origin.

The fire spread quickly to other palapas, cabins, and small businesses in the area, causing total material losses in approximately 60 to 70 establishments.

“Authorities and emergency crews continue verification tours in the area to rule out additional risks and assess damage,” the agency said.

Municipal authorities in Santa María Colotepec added that the fire started around 1:45 a.m. and affected more than 200 workers who depend economically on these businesses.

Civil Protection recommended that in such situations, residents and service providers should reinforce prevention measures, including regularly checking electrical installations and avoiding improvised connections; keeping flammable materials away from kitchens, stoves, or electrical installations; maintaining fire extinguishers in good condition and knowing how to use them; and avoiding leaving candles, grills, or stoves unattended.
