Cancún, Mexico — Antonela, a 10-month-old infant, is fighting for survival after being critically injured in a shooting incident in Cancún. The attack, which occurred Friday night in Supermanzana 240, has shocked the nation as the baby was transported to Mexico City for specialized medical care.
The Attack and Immediate Aftermath
The shooting took place on Block 60 of Emiliano Zapata Street, where two masked gunmen opened fire outside a residence. One man was killed instantly, and two others, including Antonela, were wounded. The infant was struck by a stray bullet, leaving her in life-threatening condition.
Initially, there were fears that Antonela had succumbed to her injuries due to the severity of her wound. However, against all odds, she was stabilized at the IMSS clinic known as "La Cuchilla" before being transferred to Cancún’s General Hospital, where she remained in critical condition.
Emergency Transfer to Mexico City
On Sunday night, under tight security and accompanied by medical personnel and her mother, Antonela was transported in a fully equipped ambulance from Cancún’s General Hospital "Jesús Kumate Rodríguez" to a private flight terminal (FBO). Traffic police cleared the route along Kabah Avenue and Colosio Boulevard to ensure a smooth and safe journey, avoiding sudden movements that could worsen her condition.
The ambulance moved at a steady but cautious pace, taking the least obstructed path to minimize risks. Antonela, connected to multiple life-support devices, was flown to a high-specialty hospital in Mexico City, where advanced medical resources are available to continue her treatment.
Investigation and Public Outcry
As of now, no suspects have been detained in connection with the attack. The State Attorney General’s Office has launched operations to locate the perpetrators, with forensic teams collecting shell casings and witness testimonies from the crime scene—an area increasingly affected by violence in recent months.
Two police officers who initially responded to the incident have been suspended and are under investigation for allegedly refusing to transport Antonela to a hospital for urgent care. A crime reporter covering the attack ultimately helped rush the baby to the IMSS clinic on a motorcycle.
Antonela’s plight has sparked widespread outrage, symbolizing the toll of violence on innocent lives. Her struggle to survive has resonated across Mexico, drawing attention to the broader issue of gun violence affecting families caught in the crossfire.
Medical Update
The latest medical report indicates that Antonela remains in serious but stable condition as she undergoes further treatment in Mexico City.
