Cancun, Quintana Roo — An explosion at a commercial building on Avenida Tulum in Cancun injured two people on Friday, with one worker suffering third-degree burns and remaining in intensive care.
The blast occurred at the “Marea Helada” establishment in Supermanzana 20, causing panic among residents and nearby businesses. Preliminary reports indicate two people were injured, one critically, with material damage to at least three businesses and nearby vehicles.
Security Cameras Capture Explosion
Witnesses and security cameras captured the moment of the explosion, showing the shockwave projecting glass and debris approximately 100 meters into the street and even reaching the opposite lane, alarming pedestrians and drivers.
Initial investigations suggest the explosion may have been caused by a malfunction in a water heater or boiler. The State Prosecutor’s Office has cordoned off the area to determine if additional gas leaks contributed to the incident.
Civil protection and firefighters continue their work at the scene.
Rescue Efforts and Victim Care
Among the injured is a worker who was performing remodeling work inside the building. He suffered third-degree burns and remains in intensive care. His wife was also injured but is reported to be in stable condition.
Municipal police officers rescued the man, who had been trapped in the rear of the establishment.
Avenida Tulum remains closed to traffic while investigators complete their work.
