The government of Playa del Carmen has announced that the proposed Fyre 2 event does not have the necessary registration or conditions to proceed.
Following a thorough review, the Playa del Carmen government, under the leadership of Estefanía Mercado, confirmed that the Fyre 2 event lacks the necessary registration, planning, and conditions for it to take place. The inaugural Fyre Festival, which was marketed as an exclusive luxury experience in the Bahamas featuring music, gourmet food, and top-tier accommodations, turned out to be a scam, leaving hundreds of attendees stranded.
In 2018, it was reported that William "Billy" McFarland, the organizer of the Fyre Festival, was sentenced to six years in prison on two counts of fraud related to the event. Last week, McFarland announced during a virtual press conference that Playa del Carmen would host the second edition of the festival. Despite acknowledging the failure of the first event, he stressed that he was collaborating with professionals to ensure an unforgettable experience this time around.
McFarland claimed to have secured all necessary permits from local authorities to hold the event. Raúl Tassinari, the Secretary of Citizen Security of Playa del Carmen, was present at the conference and assured that festival-goers' safety was guaranteed. The event organizers also stated that the lineup of performing artists would be released this week and that the festival would take place at venues such as the Martina and Coralina beach clubs.
However, the local government announced on Wednesday that the event would not be happening in Playa del Carmen. They stated, "After a responsible review of the situation, it is confirmed that there is no registration, planning, or conditions indicating the realization of such an event in the municipality."
The government emphasized their commitment to acting responsibly, prioritizing public order, security, and social coexistence. They also stressed that any official information would be communicated directly and promptly through the appropriate channels.
