Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The government of Estefanía Mercado has reaffirmed its commitment to economic development and sustainable tourism by supporting the inauguration of the expansion of Hotel Xcaret México. The historic $700 million investment is expected to generate over 2,000 new direct jobs, further establishing Playa del Carmen as a national and international benchmark for tourism with cultural identity.
A Model of Socially Conscious Tourism
Mayor Estefanía Mercado emphasized that the project represents a model of tourism with social purpose, inclusivity, and deep roots in local heritage while boosting the city’s brand.
"The expansion of Hotel Xcaret México is a clear indicator that businesses continue to invest in our country and, of course, in Playa del Carmen. This is tourism that creates opportunities and prosperity for everyone," Mercado stated.
The mayor highlighted that, in collaboration with private initiatives and all levels of government, efforts are underway to attract further investments and large-scale events to mitigate seasonal tourism declines.
"We secured the Beach Volleyball World Championship, hosted over 300 sporting events, and will continue promoting art, culture, and fashion as platforms to showcase the best of Playa del Carmen," she added.
Economic and Social Impact
During the event, Governor Mara Lezama acknowledged the social impact of the investment: "This project is not just about economic investment but also well-paying jobs and life-changing opportunities."
Federal Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez praised Grupo Xcaret as an example of inclusive tourism aligned with the national strategy "Tourism for México."
Altagracia Gómez Sierra, Coordinator of the Regional Economic Development and Business Relocation Advisory Council, underscored the role of family-owned businesses in sustainable growth and their positive impact on the economy, particularly for women.
