Cancún, Mexico — The sky above Cancún was illuminated by a spectacular drone show celebrating the return of Mexican driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez to Formula 1. The event, organized by the account @aionshowdrones, took place following the official announcement that Pérez will drive for the Cadillac team in the 2026 season.

Pérez was announced this past Tuesday as a driver for the Cadillac escudería. He will be partnered with Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas, who was described as a Mexican by adoption due to his well-known love for tacos, having been seen eating at taquerías across the country. Pérez had most recently served as a reserve driver for Mercedes in the 2025 Formula 1 season after his departure from Kick Sauber.

The celebratory drone show, which lasted 29 seconds, depicted a helmet adorned with the Mexican flag, followed by the phrases “I’M BACK” and “¡Vamos Checo!”.

A social media post accompanying a video of the display read, “Spectacular drone show to celebrate Checo’s return 😍🥹 Because that and MORE is what you deserve champion.”

Cadillac as Checo Pérez’s Final Major F1 Project

At a press conference in Mexico City, Sergio Pérez explained that the Cadillac project is a highly “ambitious” one and hinted that it may be where he ends his racing career.

“I really liked the project, the ambition, what they have done in different categories, and the American vision of arriving in F1 not just to compete. I am returning not just to be in F1; I am returning with this project, which is something beautiful, and I see this project as my last great project that I can do in F1, and I have a great responsibility to make it work,” he stated during the press conference at Mexico City’s Plaza Carso.

Cadillac, which has the backing of General Motors and will be led by former Marussia sporting director Graeme Lowdon, will become the eleventh team on the Formula 1 grid next season.

“Signing two such experienced drivers as (Valtteri) Bottas and Checo is a clear statement of intent. They have seen it all and know what it takes to succeed in Formula 1, but most importantly, they understand what it means to help build a team,” said Lowdon in a statement provided by his team.

Sergio Pérez was accompanied throughout the event by Mexican fans who gathered at Plaza Carso. On repeated occasions, cheers of support for the new Cadillac driver interrupted the conference. ‘Checo’ concluded his presentation with a message for his followers.

“Let’s enjoy it greatly, let’s enjoy every moment, every result; it’s the last one. Let’s return to enjoy it together because it’s going to go by very quickly,” Checo stated.
