Kantunil, Yucatan — A driver died Tuesday afternoon after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into fence posts on the Merida-Cancun highway at kilometer 86, authorities said.
The accident occurred on the Kantunil-Puerto Juarez stretch when a gray Nissan sedan with license plate UUE-023-L was heading toward Merida. Preliminary reports indicate excessive speed caused the driver to lose control.
The vehicle left the roadway violently, traveled several meters through brush, and collided head-on with fence posts lining the highway.
Witnesses called emergency services. Officers from the Public Security Department (SSP) and the National Guard arrived to assist, but paramedics found the driver — whose identity has not been released — dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
Federal and state agents cordoned off the area to preserve evidence. Personnel from the Medical Forensic Service (SEMEFO) and the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) conducted an investigation and removed the body for an autopsy.
The severely damaged vehicle was towed to an impound lot as part of the ongoing investigation.
