Palacio Legislativo de San Lázaro. — The Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) published the decree that reforms the Monetary Law with the objective of incentivizing the use and circulation of the twenty-peso coin, which will enter into force tomorrow, Tuesday, January 20.
On December 9, 2025, the Chamber of Deputies approved the ruling with 395 votes in favor, 66 against, and zero abstentions, through which Article 2 of the Monetary Law of the United Mexican States is reformed, specifically regarding the characteristics of the twenty-peso coin.
According to the ruling—derived from the analysis of an initiative presented by the President of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo—the reform establishes a generic or standard design for this denomination, in addition to existing commemorative designs. The objective is to have a coin that is easy to identify, with standardized characteristics, that promotes greater daily use and wider circulation.
The standard design will have as its main motif the Temple of Kukulkán, located in the pre-Hispanic city of Chichén Itzá, in Yucatán, one of the most important centers of Mayan civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
With this reform, the legal framework in effect since 1992 is updated to strengthen the presence of the twenty-peso coin in daily transactions, maintaining a design representative of Mexico’s cultural heritage and facilitating its recognition and acceptance among the population.
