Tulum, Quintana Roo — Tourist service providers in Tulum have expressed their concern and dissatisfaction over the abandonment of a dock project that was planned for construction at Playa Pescadores. The initiative was part of the comprehensive plan for the Jaguar Park, promoted by the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu).
Alonso Gutiérrez, a boat operator who was a pioneer in the area, stated that the dock was a fundamental piece of infrastructure for tourism operations and maritime safety. “It was for us service providers to be able to board tourists there in an orderly and safe manner, and it was even going to be used by sargassum boats to facilitate the collection of sargassum on the high seas,” he explained.
He noted that the dock, in addition to improving the logistics of boarding and disembarking, represented a long-term solution to prevent damage to coastal ecosystems caused by the current improvised operating system on the beach.
Sources from the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) confirmed that the project was under the responsibility of the Sedatu, the same agency that designed and executed the Jaguar Park. However, the dock initiative has stalled, and to date, there have been no advances or public information regarding its execution.
Neither the dimensions, the technical characteristics, nor the planned investment amount were disclosed. It simply disappeared from the plan.
For the maritime workers, the pausing or discarding of the dock represents not only a step backward in terms of infrastructure but also a lost opportunity to elevate the quality of nautical tourism in Tulum.
Faced with this situation, the boat operators and service providers have called on federal authorities to resume the project and fulfill what was announced in its time as an integral part of the sustainable development of the Jaguar Park.
