Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) held a public meeting at the Kuchil Baxal gymnasium to provide information about the Cancún Multimodal Terminal project, promoted by the Maya Train initiative. Vicente Silva, Director of Social Participation Standards, moderated the session, addressing citizen concerns regarding the start of construction and the terminal’s cargo capacity.
Representatives from the Maya Train, including Natalia Cordero, explained the technical and environmental details of the project, which is part of the 1,553-kilometer railway system. The terminal is one of nine planned for the rail network and will feature 52 containers capable of transporting up to 102 tons of cargo.
Project Timeline and Sustainability Measures
The construction is expected to take 18 months and aims to integrate modern infrastructure with sustainability measures to minimize environmental impact. Officials emphasized that the terminal will serve as a cornerstone for the region’s economic and social development.
Facilities at the terminal will include:
- A hazardous waste storage area
- Housing for the National Guard and crew members
- A Tetra antenna
- A customs building
- Weighing scales
- Warehouses
- Control booths
- Water tanks
- Administrative offices
- A locomotive workshop
- A wastewater treatment plant
- A fuel supply zone
- Conservation areas
Public Feedback and Next Steps
All questions and observations raised during the meeting will be compiled by Semarnat’s General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment for further review.
The Maya Train project continues to advance as a key infrastructure initiative for Mexico, with the Cancún Multimodal Terminal playing a pivotal role in its logistics network.
