Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Local deputy and leader of the Green Party in Quintana Roo, Renán Sánchez Tajonar, has called for public debate and reflection on the environmental impact of jet skis in Bacalar Lagoon, a critical ecosystem in the southern part of the state. Through his social media channels, the legislator posed a direct question: "Are you for or against jet skis in Bacalar?" aiming to foster a broader discussion on protecting this globally unique body of water.
Environmental Concerns Take Center Stage
Sánchez Tajonar warned that excessive and unregulated use of these watercraft could jeopardize the ecological balance of the lagoon. He questioned whether sacrificing the health of the "Lake of Seven Colors" was worth "a moment of adrenaline." The deputy reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding Quintana Roo’s environmental heritage, stating, "Protecting Bacalar also means protecting our future. We cannot remain silent in the face of a direct threat to the state’s natural legacy."
Legislative Action on the Horizon
The deputy also announced plans to push for a comprehensive review of navigation regulations in fragile water bodies like Bacalar Lagoon through the State Congress. The goal is to establish clear limits, designate protected zones, and enforce penalties for those who harm these natural areas.
"There is no sustainable development without respect for nature. Southern Quintana Roo cannot continue to be treated as an unchecked exploitation zone," Sánchez Tajonar asserted.
This stance aligns with growing public demand for the defense of water systems, forests, and biodiversity that make Quintana Roo a unique region in Mexico.
