Dead Pufferfish Found on Tulum Shores, Investigation Underway

Dead pufferfish washed ashore on a beach in Tulum, Mexico

Tulum, Mexico — An unusual mortality of pufferfish surprised service providers and visitors on Tuesday at various beaches in Tulum, where from early hours the presence of numerous specimens stranded along the coastal strip was reported.

The fish were located in Playa del Pueblo, the hotel zone, and Santa Fe Beach, within the Jaguar National Park. Given the magnitude of the finding, staff from the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve, dependent on Conanp, implemented an inspection to document the phenomenon and collect samples to determine its cause.

The director of the Reserve, José Juan Domínguez Calderón, reported that there is still no conclusive explanation, although he recalled that similar events recorded in previous years in the region have been related to the proliferation of toxic algae or changes derived from the presence of sargassum.

“Samples will be taken for laboratory analysis; until we have results we cannot confirm the cause,” he stated.

Initial Hypotheses: Natural Phenomenon Due to Environmental Variations

While studies advance, maritime workers shared observations pointing to a natural process. Alonso Gutiérrez Sánchez, a boatman with experience in the Tulum coastline, indicated that these episodes usually coincide with abrupt temperature variations and periods of low oxygenation in the water.

“They are bottom-dwelling fish. When the temperature changes, they rise seeking refuge among algae or sargassum and many end up washed ashore,” he explained. Although he acknowledged that this year the presence was more noticeable, he assured that it is not a completely new phenomenon in the area.

According to workers in the sector, this type of mortality usually repeats at the end of the season, with variations in the number of specimens depending on the environmental conditions of each year.

Authorities Continue Analysis

Conanp and federal environmental authorities maintain the collection of samples to rule out effects from pollutants or other factors that could be influencing marine health.

For now, the case remains under investigation to clarify whether it is a recurring event associated with natural conditions or if there is some additional element impacting the species on the coasts of Tulum.
