Cancún, Quintana Roo — A recreational bike ride will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, to celebrate the opening of the Nichupté Bridge, one of Cancun’s most significant infrastructure projects.
The event, organized by the Rodadas Nocturnas Cancún cycling group, aims to promote community interaction, exercise, and responsible use of urban spaces. It is designed as an inclusive experience for cyclists of all levels, focusing on enjoyment rather than competition.
Organizers emphasized that the ride is not about speed or performance, but about creating a space for families, beginners, and urban cycling enthusiasts to come together. The invitation is open to all residents, with the goal of establishing such activities as safe alternatives for physical activity and social integration in Cancun.
The Nichupté Bridge, which will be officially inaugurated by President Claudia Sheinbaum on May 3, is a strategic addition to the city’s infrastructure. Beyond improving daily mobility, it will serve as an evacuation route during major hurricanes, particularly categories 4 and 5. The bridge provides an alternative to key avenues like Kukulcán and Bonampak, which could prove critical in emergencies.
Authorities have confirmed that the bridge will be toll-free, a decision maintained since its planning as a direct benefit to the public.
Bridge Features
- Three traffic lanes, including one reversible lane
- Intelligent traffic management system
- Integrated bike lane for sustainable mobility
- 103-meter steel arch bridge structure
- Two main junctions connecting key points
The bridge is expected to handle up to 20,000 vehicles daily, reducing travel times from over an hour to approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic volume.
In addition to Saturday’s ride, Rodadas Nocturnas Cancún has confirmed that its traditional Sunday night ride will proceed as usual. Details on times and meeting points will be announced through official channels.
These initiatives not only promote cycling but also strengthen social bonds and encourage responsible use of public space. The May 2 ride is shaping up as an opportunity to rediscover Cancun from a more active, sustainable, and inclusive perspective.
