Cozumel, Mexico — The arrival of the Star of the Seas to Cozumel this week underscores the island's position as a preferred destination for international tourists and cruise lines, according to local officials. The municipal president, José Luis Chacón, stated that the arrival of the world's largest cruise ship is a clear example of the island's continued appeal, which will generate greater economic benefits for the region.

A Preferred Destination Confirmed

Chacón noted that the arrival of this vessel confirms Cozumel's place within the cruise industry as a pioneering international port. He emphasized that the island offers all the attractions cruise passengers seek, including the most picturesque reefs within the Cozumel Reefs National Park.

During the plaque exchange ceremony marking the ship's first docking in the port of Cozumel on its inaugural Caribbean voyage, the mayor recalled the long-standing history of hospitality between the island and the cruise industry. He stated that this relationship will continue, fostering a synergy that contributes to the island's economy.

Investment and Natural Appeal

For her part, María Fernanda Vargas González, Second Councilwoman and President of the City Council's Tourism Commission, commented that Cozumel remains a destination that offers what tourists are looking for: clean beaches free of sargassum and coral reefs. "We continue to be a diving destination, and other cruise lines maintain their routes to the island," she said.

Vargas González highlighted the importance of the destination within the cruise routes of the Mexican Caribbean and the investment that Royal Caribbean itself has on the island with the Royal Beach Cozumel project. She stated the project is expected to be completed and operational by next year, which will leave a greater economic impact and attract more passengers.

Anticipating a Year-End Surge

Furthermore, she said an uptick in passenger numbers is expected by the end of this year, as November and December typically see a higher volume of cruise ship arrivals. This surge is anticipated to be important for closing 2025 with strong numbers, potentially even surpassing those of 2024.
